What Families Can Expect

When you come to Nemours, your family becomes our family. From your first appointment through treatment and beyond, we work to make every part of your experience as smooth as possible.

We want you to feel informed and empowered before your first visit. We take time to understand your needs and schedule your first appointment quickly and at your convenience. We’ll help you coordinate all the details like tests and records transfer, and more.

Scheduling Your Visit

You can schedule an appointment by calling our central appointment line. For urgent issues, we offer same-day appointments whenever possible.

Throughout your child’s time with us, we try our best to make it easy on your family. Whether it’s using online video visits, scheduling visits with multiple care team members at once, or following up at a satellite location that’s a little closer to home, we do everything we can to help you.

Your First Clinic Visit

Your first clinic visit can last one to two hours. You'll be welcomed by our front desk team and then meet with a nurse who will collect vital signs and medical history. Your child's physician will conduct a thorough exam and discuss any concerns. Depending on your child's needs, you may also meet with specialists like social workers or Child Life specialists. Before you leave, our team will provide a clear plan for next steps and make sure all your questions are answered.

Hospital Stay

If your child requires hospitalization, our admission team will guide you through the process. Upon arrival, you'll check in at the admissions desk where staff will complete needed paperwork and provide identification bands. A nurse will show you to your child's room and explain how to use the call system, meal ordering and other hospital amenities. Your care team will establish a daily routine including rounds, medication schedules and therapy sessions.

Preparing for your child's hospital visit can help make the experience more comfortable. Here’s a list of things to bring:

  • Your child's insurance card and photo ID
  • List of current medications, including dosages and schedules
  • Names and contact information for all healthcare providers your child sees
  • Comfortable clothes for your child (including pajamas for overnight stays)
  • Your child's favorite comfort item (blanket, stuffed animal, or toy)
  • Entertainment items like books, tablets, headphones, or games
  • Basic toiletries for both your child and accompanying family members
  • Snacks and drinks for parents/caregivers (child-friendly options are available on-site)
  • Important phone numbers and emergency contacts
  • Any medical equipment your child regularly uses
  • A notebook to record information and questions for the care team
  • Clothing changes for your child and yourself
  • Phone chargers and other electronic device accessories
  • Your child's school assignments if applicable

Note: Each of our locations has laundry facilities, family kitchenettes and access to basic toiletries if needed. Please leave valuable items at home whenever possible.

Your child's safety is our highest priority. We maintain enhanced safety protocols across all our locations to protect our patients, especially those with weakened immune systems.
